1. The city of the Three Cultures
We exit by the
Porta del Gel (Ice Gate)

and make the most
of the occasion to take a look at the wall from the feudal epoc

From here we can
go up by the footbridge that runs beside the wall to Santa Maria or go up by Carrer
de la Muralla to see the Porta d'Albesa

Following this
route we arrive at the garden of Els Erals where remains of the Islamic wall from
the 10th century which closed the city on this side are preserved. From here we visit
the great Gothic church of Santa Maria la Major

We go down the
first section of the stairway built in the 50's, and go back up Carrer Santa Maria
for a few metres until its confluence with Carrer de la Costa to go into the alleyways
of the Islamic city

On finishing the
first section of the street we turn right into Carrer de Sant Domènec, which
goes down a steep hill, arriving in a little square. There, we continue straight
on until crossing the steps of Santa Maria once again and continue on down, now a
section of Carrer de sant Pere, and turn immediately to the left, taking Carrer Franc
and leaving a curious cul-de-sac to the right. This street leads us directly to the
Plaça del Pou (The Well Square)

We take Carrer
Major on our left, and fork immediately to the right, leaving the bottom of the steps
of Santa Maria to our left. In a few metres we take a little street to the left that
opens into La Reguereta

From the other
side of the wash house, we take the narrow street that goes up to the left towards
the Plaça de sant Salvador where the mosque of Avimoni.

was situated.
So we continue along Carrer del Torrent, which goes up from the square in a northerly
direction to the Porta díAlcoraç

Outside the city
once again, we climb up to Castle Formós

the Sanctuary
of the Holy Ghost where the façade and part of the nave of the Romanesque
church of Santa Maria d'Almatà are still preserved

and the Pla d'Almatà

the most important
Islamic site in Catalonia, still unrestored and in the research process. We
go back down to the Porta d'Alcoraç and return to the town. Now, however,
we take the first street on the left, Bernat Galí, which leads us to the south
side of the castle where we can observe the remains of the castle structures which
are preserved in this area. From there we go down by Carrer del Cuartel which once
again will lead us to the Plaça de sant Salvador where we see the remains
of the Romanesque church

From there we
go up by Carrer d'Avall

which opens out
to the south and which leads us to the Plaça del Mercadal where the ancient
Paeria (Town Council) and the Hospital of Sant Joan and the Jewish quarter were situated

We end the walk
in the Museum of La Noguera. |
