The Collections
The collections that form the basis of the museum can be classified according
to their subject matter in two broad blocs:
- The Archaeological
Collection
- The Art Collection
1. The Archaeological Collection
Formed by the
old collection of the municipal museum of Balaguer with the material that appeared
between 1969 and 1973 in the excavation at Castle Formós, and the materials
from the archaeological campaigns carried out in Balaguer and the district after
the Decree 155/81 of the 11th of June whereby the regulations on archaeological excavations
in Catalonia was passed. From among the latter we should highlight the prehistoric
excavations of La Roca dels Bous at Llorenç de Montgai and La Cova del Parco
at Alós de Balaguer, the prehistoric sites of the La Pedrera at Vallfogona
de Balaguer and the Dovecote of Gerb, the Visigothic remains at El Bovalar de Serós,
and the Medieval sites of Castle Formós, Pla díAlmatà and the historic
centre, all in Balaguer.
2. The Art
Collection
Fundamentally,
the art collection covers pieces from the 14th-17th centuries, and the 20th century.
As far as the first are concerned, the altarpieces attributed to the Master of Vielha
(15th century) are notable, and those of the Master of Balaguer (early 16th century)
considered lost during the civil war until recently, and that once recuperated and
restored were the object of a temporary exhibition in the museum (see publications).
The contemporary art collection to a large extent came from the art collection of
the Balaguer town council in which, as well as the important "Borràs
Behest" (see publications), there are notable works by Viola, Rafols Casamada,
Eduard Alcoy, Rosa Siré, Jaume Minguell, etc., as well as works by local artists
like Marcel·li Bergé (see publications), Andreu Saiz, Josep M. Llobet,
Antoni Collado, etc.
