of Balaguer (San Nicolás de los Arroyos, Argentina, 1920), with critical
texts by Fernando Lázaro and Francesc Fité. An artist set within what
could be called surrealist symbolism, he has a previous period in which his still
lives and portraits are notable. His facet on the interpretations of Don Quixote
by Cervantes is important.

El Mestre de Balaguer
(segle XVI)
The Master of
Balaguer is the anonymous artisan who during the first quarter of the 16th century
decorated the high altar of the church of Sant Salvador de Balaguer. Since 1936 it
was considered that the altarpieces had disappeared and they were only known thanks
to photographic documents prior to this date. The discovery and later restoration
by the Restoration Service of Movable Goods of the Generalitat de Catalunya have
permitted the recuperation of 16 of the panels of the altarpiece (some fragmented)
for the history of art, which are studied in this publication by Joaquim Garriga,
in their artistic facet, and by Josep M. Xarrié, as far as the problems of
the restoration process are concerned.
